Two angels on a ladder

There were two angels on a ladder. One was ascending and descending on it all the time. The other one stood motionless and didn’t do anything.

Someone asked him: ”Why the other angel is going upwards and downwards on it without cease and you’re staying without work?”

”Because the other one takes the prayers and requests of the people to God.” <Give me this, give me that.> ”My job is to take their thanks to heaven and because people don’t say any thanks, I stay without work…Sometimes there is someone who says a ”Glory to You, God!” They find it hard to say: ”Glory to You, God!” Or a ”thank You!”

 

The woman I trust

She is addicted to love, since she gets her nourishment from love, she breathes through love. Love is her creed. She startles when she hears words like: life, love, purity, family, longing…

Her joys are simple: children, nature, song, animals…She loves light and beauty.. She never dares to laugh out loud, she only smiles. She behaves  decently everywhere, she does not try to stand out by anything.

She does not want to be liked by anyone else but her husband. Her fidelity is not to be guarded, she has it in her blood. She does not try to dominate the man, but wants to be dominated, because she is submissive for the sake of love.

She places exterior beauty on a lower level because her true beauty lies within her soul and this is what she tries to show outwards.

She does not like money. She fears that it falsifies her, it enslaves her, she is afraid that it kills her creed. She never cries false tears. Her mind is in her heart, for her spirit and her soul are One. She often listens to the voice of the heart, cause this is what guides her. She prefers peace instead of justice, but she always loves the TRUTH. Her voice is never imperative nor fawning. She always speaks with shyness. Her love covers quietly the mistake of the other one, but she does not forget to talk with him, in order to correct him. She cries with the one who cries and rejoices with the one who rejoices. She suffers in silence and she always has a spare smile.

She loves without asking for anything in return. She loves up to self-sacrifice. Her hope relies on faith and she fights for defending her values. She has the power to mend a broken heart only by a kiss and an embrace. She tends to enhance her love continuously, cause she is governed by the law of love. She tends to reach the sublime. She lives intensely any moment, since time is a treasure for her.

On her lips you can always read a divine song and her eyes are the gate to her soul – the place that shelters her love – and many times you can glimpse her heart through her tears.

You can find her thoughtful, for her gaze wanders afar; her steady citadel is not here.

Her name is WOMAN! She is the standard woman, the woman I trust. The harder she strives to reach more of these values, the closer she gets to the sacred purpose that was meant for her by God. And the more she estranges of these sacred things, the worse she degenerates from the nobleness of her condition of woman, losing her femininity and becoming an artificial object. The woman is the one who keeps the fire of love burning in a home, is the one who can make together with her man a true heaven on earth in her own family.

The press release of the Russian Church regarding the game Pokemon Go

The Russian Orthodox Church  has called on the players of Pokemon Go – a game that became increasingly popular in the world – to respect the privacy of other persons.

The developers of this game deliberately gave it a provoking dimension, suggesting that the game may cover absolutely any territory.

”I hope that the users of this game would have enough caution and respect the properties of other people, of the public and religious organizations, without invading the privacy of the others” –the deputy head of the synodal department for the relationships of the Church with the society and media, Vakhtang Kipshidze, declared yesterday.

POKEMON GO – The Orthodox Church asks the players to keep their sound reason.

According to this official, not only the sacred spaces, but also those designed for private life, the museums, are spaces where people try to exercise their legitimate rights and interests but they should not be transformed into a battlefield for the players of this game with no restrictions.

According to him the point of view of the Church does not refer practically to the game POKEMON GO but to its way of attracting certain people, and whether or not it’s all about a game, including a computer game, the threat relates only to the severe addiction to it.

The Church spokesman also said that not long time ago the Russian Interreligious Council had a relevant contribution to the restriction of certain gambling games in the big cities.

”Not only the Russian Orthodox Church  but also representatives of other traditional religions consider that the morbid fascination for a game endangers human integrity, the free personality of man being compromised by the nature of a computer game”, he emphasized.

Is it really found in the Holy Scripture the phrase „believe but do not search”? What is the origin of these words?

No, absolutely nothing of the kind. I think that some people used it in various discussions with theologians, especially in the Western world, where the use of the Scripture was forbidden for common people for some time, so that it would not be misinterpreted and would not become a reason for heresies and then it probably appeared this strange phrase, that was attributed in an ignorant and harmful way to the Holy Scripture.

God did not forbid knowledge, for it is a gift of the Holy Spirit, as it is noted by prophet Isaiah in the seven gifts (chapter 11, 1-3). Actually ignorance is a very serious sin and that’s the way it is indeed, because a real Christian cannot be stupid at all. In St. John’s Gospel, at chapter 17, our Savior says in His high priestly prayer: And this is eternal life, that they know You, the only true God and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. To know Him means implicitly to know His creation, for through Him all things were made and without Him nothing was made from what has been made.  Therefore it is not a matter of interdiction of the true knowledge, but only a prevention of the ambiguous one.

The silence

Once a young man visited a hermit. He wanted to learn and ask so many things. But he was astounded by the hermit’s silence and by his reluctance to continue a vain talk.

Being irritated, the young man asked him rather for trying him: Gheronda what have you learnt from life in so many years of silence?

The starets, without answering, threw the bucket into a well and lifted it back as fast as he could.

”Look in the well and tell me what you see!” he told him.

The young man looked carefully and said: ”Unfortunately I cannot see anything.”

After a few moments of silence the hermit told him again: ”Look back there and tell me what you see!”

The young man after reluctantly looking there again said: ”Now I see my face reflecting in the water as if I had my home mirror in front of me.”

The hermit without stopping his rosary, told him: ”You see?” ”When I threw the bucket in the well to take water, the water got turbid.” ”Now when it cleared up, you can see your face in it.” ”This is the experience of silence: man sees himself!”

The young man, after reverently asking for the hermit’s blessing, went back in the noisy world, but this time deeply focused.

 

Miracle happening at the tomb of pious Paisios the Athonite

A Christian relates the miracle he experienced. He claims that saint Paisios’presence changed his life. We present below the miracle as it is related by himself.

From the age of twelve I suffered cause of demonization. My life became a martyrdom. After the exorcisms they read for me, I was feeling as if I had been beaten.

On the first Saturday of the Great Lent from 1995, my confessor decided we should go to the Vigil from the monastery of Souroti.

Before departure I felt a wild struggle. During the vigil I did not feel any drowsiness. I was standing in the middle of the church with my face down and the nuns were around me. The vigil ended and they started to read the service for blessing the holy water. Then I got extremely wild but I was taken to the holy relics of saint Arsenios the Cappadocian.

It was for the first time – I confess it and shudder – when I felt that my body was burning. At the end I said: ”Pai…Pai…” The abbess aske me: ”Paisios?” And I nodded a yes. In that moment I became like a wild beast. And when they took me to the tomb, I cried for three times: ”Saint! Saint! Saint!”

Although I wanted to run away, they caught me and put my by force on the saint’s tomb. Then I saw the saint sitting up, as if he had just woken from sleep. He did not look like a dead person, but he was exactly the way he had looked when he was alive, with beard and black robe.This happened in a flash. He put his hand on my forehead and in the same moment I saw how a black smoke came out from my mouth. Then I  calmed down, but the physical pain did not stop immediately. I fell asleep and because of the pain I woke up saying: ”It hurts me a lot!”

For 40 days after this I have felt such a joy that I was crying cause of it. Maybe what I said in my prayer was too daring: ”My God, even if I were to suffer a lifetime like before, it is enough for me if I could feel again, even for the slightest moment, this joy!”

 

This is how you will say it too: Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me!

One day I asked elder Porphyrios to tell me how to pray and if it were possible to reveal to me his own way of praying. And the answer was prompt and left me speechless:

But what do you think prayer means? Food offered on order or medication given on prescription? I told you to ask just for the salvation of your soul, meaning to request to become inheritor of the eternal heavenly Kingdom. And to leave all the others to God’s judgement. I remind you once again the verse: ”Seek first the Kingdom of God…”Isn’t this enough for you? If it’s not enough or it doesn’t satisfy you completely, then limit yourself to the mental prayer. For me ”Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me” says everything. And for sure much more than what you say. It is enough to say it faithfully and  devotedly. And imagine especially in those moments that you have Jesus, the Crucified one, in front of you.

And listen to me: While you say it (the prayer) turn your mind towards me and I will seize your thought and will pray with you for you. This is the best way. And this is what I recommend you to do.

”Yes, gheronda, but you don’t say it (the prayer) right.”

”I say it right, but you misunderstand it.” ”And you know why?” ”Because you separate yourself from the rest of the world.” ”And that’s not right at all.”

We should love our brother exactly as we love ourselves. I love everybody as if they were me and for this reason I don’t see  why I should say: ”Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on us!” instead of ”have mercy on me.” And that because I and the world, we are one. This is how you should say it too: ”Have mercy on me.”

He did not leave us…

12th of July 1994 – 12th of July 2016 (22 years from the repose of the pious and God-bearer elder Paisios the Athonite)

The starets had never stopped helping people, not even after his repose.  He helped people performing miracles not only when he was on earth but also after his repose, for he did not leave us and has even more care for us. Now after the starets got rid of the mortal body, subdued by passions, he can more easily run to the aid of those who call him faithfully. Sometimes elder Paisios helps even those who have never heard anything about him or who are indifferent towards faith.

People look for protection from him and pray to him, cause they believe in his holiness. That’s why his tomb became a place of pilgrimage for the Ortodox people from all over the world. There the grieved ones receive blessing and grace. There the believers receive blessing and grace. There, at that holy font of Siloam sick people are healed and miracles take place. Not only his tomb became a place of veneration, but also his cell from the Holy Mountain. Every day worshipers stop by the place to thank him for the aid they got or others because they want to see where he lived.

One morning, at the break of dawn after we had finished the early Liturgy, we heard a light knock on the door. While I was going to open it, I wondered who could come so early. When I opened, I saw starets Paisios standing in the door slightly hunched.

”How did you manage, blessed man?” he asked.

Skinny, short, in scant attire, he was standing before me smilingly. I was so glad for his unexpected visit. He entered unobtrusively, climbed the stairs to worship in the small church, then descended in the big room from downstairs. At that time it was almost empty. Just two chairs and a table. I offered him some refreshment.

”Have patience!” he told me.

He spoke to me about the old elders of that cell. They were hard working, fond of church services, virtuous.

”This morning I had two experiences”, he said. ”A middle aged man came to me to accept him as a disciple.” ”I asked him if he had a family and he said that he had one and he had two children in primary school.” ”Then I told him: After they would graduate primary, secondary and high school and college and you would marry them, you could come back to tell you where to go to became a monk, cause I don’t keep monks here.” ”This is what some men do, make children, then leave them and go to become monks…”

”The second case is worse than the first one.” ”Another one came and told me: Gheronda, I found a woman who is of a much higher spiritual level than my wife and I came to you to ask for your blessing…” ”The world has gone crazy.” ”They speak nonsense.” ”I came to see how you are.”

He didn’t stay long, but I was so glad. He brought me blessing, joy, peace. Like then, at the monastery Simonos Petras, when he stayed for two days and nights near my cell and gave me his knitted yarmulke, before I had the time to ask him for it as a blessing, when I went to his cell. On the second night my cell was disturbed by an unexpected visit. He came in the middle of the night and knocked on my door supposedly to ask me what time it was, after how long the service would start, to comfort me.

The next day he told me why he had come. Tangalaki didn’t sleep. I always remember about the synaxis that tells us about God’s elders, seers of the uncreated light, about the charismatic monks, about long and painful struggles, tears and vigilias, icons, holy relics and miracles. Nobody reached God without effort, as abba Isaac says. We must eliminate the wordly spirit from monachism. Sweat is the monk’s bath and chrism…Prayer is his basic work, above the missionary work and philanthropy. Prayer confers eternal rest to the departed. Let us pray more for our reposed ones. May their memory be eternal! The righteous one will be eternally remembered. Hallelujah!

Tips about trust in God

Pious Paisios the Athonite

  • Great thing is when someone abandons himself in the hands of God! Men make plans and try to accomplish them, but without harking, without listening to the will of God and without complying with it.
  • We should trustfully abandon ourselves in God’s care so that He would take control of things and we should do our duty with magnanimity of soul.
  • If someone does not have trust in God, so that to entrust himself completely into His hands, he would be tormented.
  • Faith in God is not enough, trust in Him is required as well. Trust in God draws His aid. Men usually look for human comfort and after being disappointed by people they run to God. But if we don’t want to be tormented, let us look for the divine comfort, cause this is the only true comfort.
  • The Christian has trust in God and entrusts himself to God until death and he clearly sees how the hand of God saves him.
  • As apostle Paul says, faith means to believe in the unseen as well, not only in what’s seen. When we entrust our future to Christ, we urge Him to help us.
  • Complete entrusting of ourselves in the hands of God has faith as its mother by means of which man can secretly pray and can receive the fruits of hope.
  • This is an unceasing prayer and brings divine help in the moment when it’s needed.
