The Gospel of the day (Mark 1, 29-35)

The healing of Saint Peter`s mother in law

29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.

32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.

35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

Who can heal any sickness?

Saint Athanasios the Great, The life of our pious elder Anthony,  LXXXIII, in Church Fathers and Writers (1988), vol. 16, p. 236

`Anthony didn`t heal by commanding but by praying and invoking Christ`s name to be obvious for everyone that it was not him who did that but the Lord Who showed His love for men through Anthony and healed those who suffered. To Anthony belonged the prayer and ascetic endeavor for which staying in the mountain he enjoyed seeing the divine visions.`

Saint Gregory of Nyssa, About the love for the poor and the good doing, in Church Fathers and Writers (1998), vol. 30, pp. 449-450

`If you want to hear how he heals the sick then remember: who taught the bee to make the wax; and with it the honey? Who made it possible that the pine tree, terebinth and the mastic tree dripple that sticky juice? Who made the land of India which is the land of fruit and spices? Who planted the olive tree which soothes physical pains and fatigues? Who gave us the knowledge about roots and plants and also the science of the remedies found in them? Who recommended to the men the medicine which gives health?

Saint Macarios the Egyptian, The fifty spiritual homilies, homily XLVIII, 4, in Church Fathers and Writers (1992), vol. 34, p. 277

„ (…) For this came the Lord, the only true Doctor, to heal the souls of the believers of the incurable passions and to cleanse them of the dirtiness of wickedness `leper. You will tell me: Of course I believe it. This keeps me and in this I put my hopes. Therefore know this and examine yourself: does your physical suffering make you go to the worldly doctors as if Christ in whom you believed could not have healed you? You see how you deceive yourself thinking that you believe but in fact you don`t believe for real as you should. If you believed that the eternal incurable wounds of the immortal soul and its diseases caused by vice are healed by Christ, you would have believed that He can heal the bad things, the temporary diseases of the body and only to Him you would run. Taking into account that the One who created the soul made the body as well, the One who heals the immortal soul, that One can heal the body, the ephemeral diseases and suffering.
