Fire and water

A believer came to pious Pimen and asked him:

`Father, how to get rid of the bad thoughts which many times assault me?`

Looking at him kindly, father Pimen said :

`You are like the man who has fire on his left and water on his right. If the fire burns him, he takes water from the vessel and appeases it or extinguishes it completely…

`What does this mean, father ?` the believer asked him.

`The fire from the left means the bad thoughts the enemy throw in the man`s heart as you threw some sparks in a house to set it on fire and the water from the right side is the prayer to God which is poured over the fire of sins and stops it, pious Pimen told him.
