The Gospel of the day (Luke 4, 31–36)

The healing of a demonized in the synagogue

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit

31 Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.

33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

36 All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!”

Who reigns over the air?

Saint Basil the Great, About the Holy Spirit, cap.19, in Church Fathers and Writers (1989), vol. 12, p. 64

`If you think about creation (you will see then) that the powers of the skies (the Angels) were strengthened by the Holy Spirit; by strengthening it is understood the constancy in practicing good. As a result, the intimacy with God, the indifference towards evil and the remaining in a permanent bliss were given to the angelic powers by the Holy Spirit. Christ was to come and the Holy Spirit preceded Him. The Incarnation takes place, the Holy Spirit is inseparable. Miracles were made, there were given the charismas of healings (all were made) through the Holy Spirit. The demons were chased away in the name of the Spirit of God. When the devil was admonished the Spirit was present. The absolution of sins was made by the Grace of the Holy Spirit; as you`ve been washed and sanctified in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 6, 11).

The approachment of God was made through the Holy Spirit as God sent the Spirit of His Son in our hearts who cried: Abba (meaning Father)  (Galatians 4, 6).

The resurrection from the dead will be made through the work of the Spirit.

You will send Your Spirit and all will be built and You will renew the face of the earth says the Psalmist (Psalms 13, 30).”

Saint Basil the Great, About the Holy Spirit cap. XVI, in Church Fathers and Writers (1989), vol. 12, p. 55, 56

„… At the Father in the bright atmosphere of the life of the saints many places are (John 14, 2) meaning different honors. As a star distinguishes itself in its brightness of another star, the same it will happen at the resurrection of the dead  (I Corinthians 15, 41-42).

As a result, those sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1, 13-14) for the day of salvation who kept intact the fruit of the Spirit they had received will hear: Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ (Matthew 25, 21).

As for those who saddened the Holy Spirit with the evilness of their deeds and those who did not fructified the gift they received the grace they received it will be taken away from them and given to others or as one of the evangelists says, they will be cut in two (Matthew 24, 51), by their cutting in two being understood the total estrangement of the Holy Spirit. (…) That is why it was said that nobody can praise God in hell or remember God after death (Psalms 6, 6), as he does not have the aid of the Spirit.
