The Son Goes to the Father to send the Comforter
They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth:
Seeking the Holy Spirit…
Saint Basil the Great, Homilies and speeches, Homily XV, III, in Church Fathers and Writers (2009), vol. 1, pp. 255-256
The mind which succeeded to purify itself of the material passions, which was able to leave all the intelligible creation and like a fish to come out of the depths and swim at the surface of water, reaches the pure land of creation and sees the Holy Spirit where are the Son and the Father in communion with Them, in a single being and a single nature, having all of them: kindness, justice, holiness, life. The Scripture says: Your Kind Spirit (Psalm 142, 10); and again: Just Spirit (Psalm 50, 11); and again: The Holy Spirit (Psalm 50, 12); and the apostle says: the Law of the Spirit of life (Romans 8, 2).
No one of these attributes is gained afterwards or added later but as the heat is inseparable of fire and the brightness of light, this is how inseparable are of the Holy Spirit: holiness, life, kindness and justice. Thus the Holy Spirit is there – there in the blessed Nature – not counted as a multiplicity, but contemplated in Trinity; preached as a unity, not perceived as a group. As the Father is One and the Son is One, this is how the Holy Spirit is One too. However the servant spirits are uncountable multitudes in every angelic group. Therefore do not seek the Holy Spirit in creation as He is beyond Creation. Do not get down the One Who sanctifies among the sanctified ones.
The Holy Spirit fills the Angels the Archangels, sanctifies the powers and revives everything. The Holy Spirit is divided in the entire creation, is shared in various ways by everything from what is created but despite these the Holy Spirit is not diminished by those who share Him. He gives to all His Grace; it is not consumed although it is divided among those who participate at Him and all those who receive Him are full of Spirit but the Holy Spirit remains undiminished.
