A timeless miracle

What can be a greater miracle than the transformation of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of the Lord? If we were all to suddenly levitate in the air, that wouldn’t be a great miracle! If all the sick people in the world were to be healed, that wouldn’t be a great miracle either!

The great miracle is the Holy Liturgy. The great miracle is the Death, Resurrection, and Ascension to Heaven, experienced in every Liturgy. That is the great miracle! Not if a person without a leg suddenly has it restored. Saint John of Damascus, when his hand was cut off, went to the Theotokos and prayed, “Heal my hand!” and the Theotokos healed it.

When we read about such healings, we tremble and say, “Oh, what a miracle!” Yes, it is a miracle, but it is not the greatest miracle. The great miracle is the Liturgy. The great miracle is your presence in the Church, continuously celebrating the same service for 2000 years. That is the great miracle!
