The Gospel of the day (Luke 9, 44-50) The purity of the children

44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.

46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”

49 “Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”

50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”

Advice for the education of the girls

Blessed Hieronimus, Epistles regarding the education of the young girls, epistle 107, in Church Fathers and Writers (2016), vol. 16, p. 403

The things which seem insignificant but without which can`t be founded anything great are not to be despised.

Even the pronunciation of the letters and the first lessons of the teacher are taught in a way by an uneducated mouth and in a different way by an educated one. That is why you have to take care so that your daughter may not get used because of the women`s foolish pampered attitudes to say the words only halfway or to play in purple and gold. One of these affects the tongue and the other one the behavior.

She should not get used in her youth with something later she should give up on. It is written that a great part of the eloquence of the Gracchi`s came from their childhood from the tongue of their mother. The style of Hortensius was nourished from the bosom of his father. It is very hardly erased what had already imbibed the uneducated minds. Who can make the purple clothes get back the original colour of the wool?

The pitcher which was not made properly retains for a long time the taste and smell of what imbibed it first. Greek history tells us that Alexander the great king and the conqueror of the whole world could not get rid of the flaws of his pedagogue Leonidas – regarding manners or posture – which contaminated him since he was a child. The man is more inclined to imitate the bad things and the one who doesn`t want to follow virtues is more tempted to follow the irrational passions.

The nurse should not be a drunkard or a wanton or a chatterbox. The attendant should be modest and the nurse serious.

When the small girl would see her grandfather she should run to his bosom and hang on his neck and sing aliluiah even if he doesn`t want it. And her grandmother should take care of her and her father should be recognized by her from his laugh. They should all love her and be glad they gave birth to such a rose. In the same time she should take care she has one more grandmother her aunt and what an aunt! The young disciple should be fed for that Emperor (Christ) and for that army. She should desire these and she should threaten you with the leave towards those.
