The Gospel of the Day

The Parable of the Tares

24 Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’

28 “An enemy did this,’ he replied.

“The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’

29 “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”

God is not the Creator of evil

Saint Basil the Great Homilies and Speeches, The 9th Homily  About the fact that God is not the Creator of evil, IV-V, in Church Fathers and Writers (2009), vol. 1, pp. 161; 163-164

I could be told:

`If God is not the Creator of evil, why do they say in the Scripture:

I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things. (Isaiah 45, 7); and again: `because disaster has come from the Lord,    even to the gate of Jerusalem.` (Micah 1,12) and When disaster comes to a city, has not the Lord caused it?  (Amos 3, 6); and Moses says in his chanting: `See now that I myself am he!    There is no god besides me.I put to death and I bring to life,
I have wounded and I will heal,    and no one can deliver out of my hand.` (Deuteronomy 32, 39)?
For someone who understands the meaning of the Holy Scriptures none of these texts includes any accusation against God as if He were the author and creator of evil.

(…) When you hear the words: There is no evil in the city which was not brought by God, think about the word evil. The Scripture speak here about evil in the meaning of trouble brought against the sinful for correcting their mistakes according to the words of God:

: He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.  (Deuteronomy 8, 3). Before injustice becomes too great God stops it as a water flow is stopped with dams. For this the pandemics which come over cities and nations, the dryness of the air, the unfruitfulness of the land and all the other disasters which take place in the life of everyone have as their purpose to stop the growth evil. Meaning that God sends some troubles, calamities like these to impede the appearance of the real disasters.

The physical sickness and the troubles from outside are made for stopping sin. So God destroys evil. But evil is not from God. Because even the doctor destroys sickness but he doesn`t bring it in the body himself.
