The Duties of the Christian

  1. What is the first and greatest concern of the believer in his life?

The first and greatest concern of the believer in his life is the concern for the salvation of his soul. Nothing is more precious for him than the salvation of his soul according to the word of the Savior Who says:

For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?  Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? (Mark VIII, 36-37).

  1. But what means salvation ?

Salvation is the release from the bondage of sin and death and the gaining of the eternal life in God. This was made possible for us by the incarnation, sacrifice and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ and we get it by the divine grace wherewith  we must cooperate by faith and good deeds. Any man can partake salvation because God

who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth (I Tim. II, 4).

  1. Where is found the truth that leads to salvation?

The truth that leads to salvation is found in the Holy Orthodox Church, `the pillar and foundation of truth.` (I Tim. III, 15).

  1. From whom does the Orthodox Church have this truth?

The Orthodox Church has this truth from God and it was announced beforehand by the prophets, patriarchs and righteous men who had a holy life and way of thinking and it was accomplished by Jesus Christ the Savior.

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. (Hebrews I, 13).

  1. How did God give this truth?

God gave this truth by divine revelation.
